Automated Sky Monitoring

Welcome to the SKYOBS video observatory.

Based in the East Midlands area of the United Kingdom, using a mixture of "off the shelf" equipment, custom electronics and computer software, the observatory went through a major redesign in the Summer 2011. Testing of new instrumentation and techniques is ongoing but full uninterrupted operation is envisaged to start sometime during the winter 2011/12.

The observatory currently operates:-

  • Cloud Camera
  • Meteor Camera
  • Sky Temperature Detector
  • Light Intensity
  • Weather Station

Future planned further enhance include the introduction of "Forward Scatter" meteor detection equipment, a magnetometer and 180° night-time all sky camera. More »

European students are among the regional winners in the YouTube Space Lab student science competition, co-sponsored by ESA. The ultimate winners will have their experiment performed on the International Space Station, live-streamed to a global audience.

This car was not snapped with a camera but scanned by a 3D imaging lidar, the laser equivalent of radar. ESA is developing the sensor as a navigation aid for exploring deep space.

Policy, solutions and funding for new initiatives: ESA is joining forces at two events with decision-makers, universities, industry and users to map how space services can contribute to emerging challenges in the Arctic.
